Interview by Sharon Swathi Gaddala

Sharon - Who or what inspired you to write this book?

Author Ocean Bloom - I always wanted to bring attention to different sociological problems and issues that divide people and even nations. I wanted to generate awareness of inequalities and abuses conducted by certain industries and governments. I have seen people suffering due to personal situations and I wanted to tell them that they are not alone and they can change things. I wanted to bring hope to people’s lives and make a difference. Writing is a great medium that carries the message to a broad audience.

Sharon - What can you tell us about your book?

Author Ocean Bloom - Lucid Dreams centers around Bjorn, a young man looking to find meaning in his life after things take a dramatic turn for the worse. Bjorn compounds his issues by making poor decisions in an attempt to fix the previous mistakes he made. He becomes entangled in an "organisation" that claims to take from the rich to give to the poor, but is definitely not what it seems. Bjorn needs to find a way out, but it’s not that easy. Can he use their own politics and technology against them and break free of their control, or is there only one way out, now that he’s in? This book digs deep into questions of technology in society, the power of wealth, and the dichotomy of doing evil for good.

Sharon - What Genre is your book and why did you make that choice?

Author Ocean Bloom - It is a psychological thriller with the tension raising as the story progresses. I thought it would be the best genre to engage the reader.

Sharon - How long did it take for you to complete this book?

Author Ocean Bloom - It took me about 15 months to write my first draft of the book, and another 4 months to edit it.

Sharon - What was the hardest part while writing this book?

Author Ocean Bloom - Writing is enjoyable and creative, which I love but it and is hard, which I hate. It gives you satisfaction but also frustrates you. It is a yin and yang relationship with the two opposing energies crashing with each other constantly.

Sharon - How did you come up with the Title of this book?

Author Ocean Bloom - I wanted something that represented one of the main themes in the book, where the main character, Bjorn, was confused as to what was real or not real in his life. A lucid dream is one where the dreamer becomes aware that he or she is dreaming, and may even gain some control over the dream. I thought this described Bjorn’s situation.

Sharon - Did you design your book cover or hire a professional?

Author Ocean Bloom - I designed the book cover myself and used a picture taken by a street photographer. It is a picture of a pill that reflects one of the themes in the book.

Sharon - Did you self-Publish or use a publisher? Who was the publisher and how much time did they take to publish your book.

Author Ocean Bloom - I self-published on Amazon.

Sharon - How did you celebrate after you completed your book?

Author Ocean Bloom - I pop a bottle of champagne and celebrate with a nice dinner. But I also know that the book is never finished. Yes, the writing process can be finished but then the hard part comes, which is facing reality and promoting the book. As an author, it is very rewarding to see people reading the book and enjoying it. If that is the feedback that you get from your readers, well then you may as well pop another bottle of champagne.

Sharon - How do you deal with negative reviews on your book review?

Author Ocean Bloom - I haven’t received a negative review yet. There have been a couple critical comments in positive reviews, and I will consider those when I write my next book.

Sharon - When did you start writing?

Author Ocean Bloom - I started writing years ago, but this is the first book that I published.

Sharon - How many books have you written?

Author Ocean Bloom - This is my first book. Hopefully it is not the last one.

Sharon - Who is your favourite Author and why?

Author Ocean Bloom - George Orwell. I love his perspective of the world and respect for justice. I enjoy his style characterised by lucid prose, biting social criticism, opposition to totalitarianism, and outspoken support of democratic socialism. I also value his take on the human mind and behaviours that are timeless.

Sharon - What advice would you give to a writer, for their first book?

Author Ocean Bloom - Don’t get discouraged. Find something that you like, stay focused and enjoy what you are doing. Regardless if you are writing a book or living your life. Have fun with it! “Men can only be happy when they do not assume that the object of life is happiness.” – George Orwell.
